Long a popular tourist destination, this barrier island off the Georgia coast boasts a remarkably rich mix of cultural heritage and natural history. Beginning with the precontact era when the Timucua people came to the island to harvest fish and shellfish, to the landing of the Wanderer in 1858 with its illegal cargo of enslaved African men, women, and children, through its 19th Century role as a private retreat for the rich and famous, to its present-day status as a state park, Jekyll Island has extraordinary stories to tell.
